![]() These DI boxes were first developed in the 1960s, and they were developed to help solve the problem of mismatching impedance between mixing consoles and instruments.Įngineers like Ed Wolfrum first developed their own DI boxes in their studios, and what we know as passive direct boxes came about in world-famous recording studios like Motown, United Sound Systems, and Golden World Records. Think of it as a converting device or a connecting device between instruments and mixers, and DI boxes are crucial pieces of equipment for recording and performing live. ĭI boxes usually take the unbalanced signal from instruments like an electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, or keyboard, and convert the signal into a balanced signal for recording or live performances. What is a DI Box?ĭI box, short for direct box, is a device that converts unbalanced, high impedance signal to balanced, low impedance mic-level signal. In this article, we will take an in-depth look at both the DI Box and the reamp box, find out exactly how they are different, and figure out which one is the right choice for you. Check out our guide to the best DI BoxesĭI boxes and reamp boxes are often confused with one another, and visually, they are hard to tell apart. We cover the differences in utility between a DI box and a Reamp box.Understand the re-amping process and why we use Reamp boxes.Learn what a DI box is, and what it’s used for.Like I said - I'll probably bite the bullet and just buy a box but I just wanted to know from the experts what options I have.Disclosure: We may receive commissions when you click our links and make purchases. I don't pretend to be an expert on this stuff but whther it is -10db or +4db, I think it will still result in a rolloff of the high end sending a low impedance signal into a guitar amp meant for a high impedance input. I am aware that -10db is consumer level and I think the idea was to lower the level going into the amp, but I don't think that addresses any impedance mismatching. Not sure if I can call sweetwater from Canada without a charge. It looks like exactly what I need- and they actually make them here in town (vancouver -canada) which I just found out.īy the way- I don't work for this company- if anyone can steer me in the direction of any other units that are better/cheaper/you've used with good results- please, by all means let me know. I just may buy one of those devices- in my other post I mentioned this one. I'd rather not spend the money on a device built specifically for that if I don't have to ![]() I've also heard I could just switch the output on the delta1010 to -10db and it will be fine. I know they make such devices but I was told by a sales guy the local store that I could just use a regular DI box but the exact reverse of how you'd normally convert your guitar signal to line level. The way I understand it is I need to "step down" the line level signal to a low level-high impedance instrument level in order not to worst case -fry the input on the amp or possibly get some signal loss. Send my already recorded dry guitar tracks (recorded using DI box) back out from my delta 1010 into a guitar amp. Maybe I'm not explaining myself correctly but it seems pretty clear to me. I posted in the techniques forum but not one reply.
